An advertising campaign is being launched in Charnwood this week urging litter bugs to save a packet by putting their gum in the bin.

Charnwood Borough Council has teamed up with the Chewing Gum Action Group (CGAG) to help prevent people irresponsibly disposing their chewy.

The advertising campaign is warning offenders they are not only blighting the area by dropping gum, but they will receive a fine of 80 if they are caught in the act.

An information stand will be erected in Loughborough Market on Thursday to mark the commencement of the campaign and to enable people to find out more about the initiative.

In addition Information is being circulated through posters at bus stops, and a van towing an eye catching billboard will be driving around the borough this week to raise awareness of the campaign.

Venues to be visited will include Loughboroughs Tesco store, in Park Road, on Monday and Sainsburys, in Greenclose Lane, on Wednesday.

The council has identified 10 areas across Loughborough where patches of pavement have been cleaned up and will be monitored throughout the campaign to see if it has affected peoples attitudes towards the way they dispose of their gum.

Charnwood Borough Councils Lead Member for the environment, Cllr. Hilary Fryer, said: This is an excellent campaign and we are pleased to be taking part. All of us have suffered at sometime from the affects of the indiscriminate disposal of chewing gum. Either having it stuck to our shoes or, even worse, to our clothes.

It is unhygienic, unsightly and expensive to get clean up. Let us make Charnwood a place where we can all walk and sit without worrying about gum.

Charnwood is one of 15 local authorities across the country that will be taking part in the campaign.
