Community Opportunities Launched in North West Leicestershire
Posted on 25/09/2009
Adult Social Care Service
A brand new service promoting choice and independence for people with a learning disability is being launched in North West Leicestershire.
Community Opportunities offers people with a learning disability the chance to play a full part in their local community.
County Council Leader David Parsons will officially open the scheme at its new base at Legion House in Ashby on Monday (28th September) - the centre will make sure that people living in North West Leicestershire can access this more personalised approach.
The service is designed to maximise people's potential by making sure they feel part of the local area and boost independence and choice through employment, training, education and leisure activities.
Three people have already established voluntary work placements in the Ashby area, thanks to Community Opportunities.
David Parsons, Leader of Leicestershire County Council, said: “Community Opportunities is the result of the County Council’s ongoing commitment to the modernisation of day services for people with a learning disability in Leicestershire. It has been designed to support people to do as much as they can for themselves, helping them have more choices and helping them stay safe.
"I am delighted we are developing the services in North West Leicestershire and with the provision of this new base in Ashby which will deliver real community opportunities for people based on their individual needs and wishes.
"This has been made possible through continuing investment and a strong relationship with our partners, strengthening our links with community groups and building on our relationship with the voluntary and independent sector.”
The County Council has worked closely with Ashby Town Council to lease space in Legion House to use as a base. As the building is used by the Town Council for meeting rooms and to provide other facilities for local community organisations in Ashby - this partnership arrangement has been instrumental in ensuring that Legion House becomes a vibrant and vital heart of the local community.
