Student doorknocking campaign begins in Loughborough
Thousands of students will be receiving information and advice over the next fortnight when police officers visit hundreds of student properties.
Advice about being safe, living alongside established residents, recycling and renting have been included in a new Community Student Handbook which will be delivered to every door.
The door knocking initiative is part of a year-long campaign – Operation Umbel -which focuses on student safety, property security, anti-social behaviour and community engagement.
Officers from Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire Police, Loughborough University and Loughborough Students’ Union, will be visiting hundreds of homes in an area of Loughborough known as the “golden triangle”, which includes the Storer Road area, and has a large student population. The aim is to help students stay safe, but also highlight the importance of respecting their neighbourhood and the community in which they live.
As well as delivering the booklets officers will also be issuing window alarms, window stickers and providing information on recycling, rubbish collection and parking.
David Snartt, Chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, said: “This is one of the most co-ordinated and extensive campaigns carried out in Loughborough to ensure the wellbeing and safety of students and encourage them to respect the community in which they live.
“The Student Handbook is packed with useful information which we hope will enable students to have a safe and enjoyable stay in Loughborough.”
PC Mike Green, the neighbourhood beat officer, said; “The door knocking campaign is a really good way of talking to students who live off campus, to help them keep their property safe. Because they live in shared accommodation they can be targeted by criminals who know that security is not a priority. We want to remind students to keep their doors and windows locked and ask them to be considerate to their neighbours particularly when they are coming home late a night.”
New colourful and eye catching posters and leaflets are also being given out to students. Designed with a tongue in cheek message which says ‘Are you Easy?’ the posters offer crime prevention advice to stop students being an ‘easy target’ for criminals.
Adrian Bailey Community Warden at Loughborough University said: "This new door knocking initiative will be a very valuable way of communicating with students living in the community early in the term."
