Rise in home debt advice
Posted on 29/09/2009
Community Services
Two thousand Leicestershire residents facing the threat of eviction have been able to take advantage of free, specialist help.
Leicestershire Money Advice Service offers expert advice and is available thanks to a partnership between the local Citizens Advice Bureaux and the County Council.
Extra funding from the County Council has meant that even more Leicestershire home-owners and tenants have been able to take advantage of this free guidance over a 12-month period.
The Citizens Advice Bureau service is a countywide network of independent charities that helps people resolve their money, legal and other problems by providing help, information and advice.
Anyone who has outgoings which are higher than their income should seek help at their local Citizens Advice Bureau or telephone 0844 248 0040 to avoid losing their home.
Byron Rhodes, Cabinet Lead Member for Regulatory Services, said: “The County Council gave an extra £100,000 of grant funding to CAB to help those who have been affected by the ‘Credit Crunch’. As a result of this, the CAB has been able to increase its capacity to deal debt clients.”
David Bull, the County Council's Head of Trading Standards, said: "We advise anyone who is struggling with debt and may be threatened with eviction to visit their local county Citizens Advice Bureau as soon as possible where they will receive free, expert advice. Businesses that offer to sort out debts charge fees and don’t always offer the best solution."
