Thumbs up for Leicestershire's roads

The condition of the roads and pavements in Leicestershire have come out on top in a national survey on highways and transport.

Over 1,000 residents were asked to express their views by completing a postal survey which was carried out in June.

Results have revealed that satisfaction of Leicestershire’s highways have put the county ahead of 25 other county councils which took part in the National Highways and Transportation Network benchmarking survey.

76 local authorities up and down the country signed up to take part in the survey and the County Council came out as fourth best council overall.

Lesley Pendleton, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said:

“The County Council is a strong performer in the highways arena.

“Importantly, it is the views of the residents of Leicestershire who have determined these results and we are pleased that the service we are providing is meeting and hopefully exceeding their expectations.”

Notes to Editors:

  • The survey is the result of a collaboration between the National Highways & Transport Network and the County Surveyors Society South West Highway Service Improvement Group, and is being supported by a number of the Regional Improvement & Efficiency Partnerships (RIEPs) most notably the South West RIEP, which has provided two tranches of funding for improvements to the mapping/reporting capabilities of the NHT Survey database.

  • The survey was carried out on behalf of the participating Local Authorities by market research specialist, Ipsos MORI.

  • Participation in the survey was voluntary.  The survey was carried out for the first time last year with 33 authorities participating. The 2009 survey has seen a 133% increase in uptake on 2008. It is believed to be the first time such a large number of separate highway authorities from all over the country have joined forces to carry out their surveys in a comparable format

  • The survey questionnaire is 12 pages long and covers all aspects of local highway and transport services (e.g. from the condition or roads and footways to the quality of local bus services).
