Preserving the cultural heritage of New York City
Posted on 02/10/09
University of Leicester
Picture Central Park, Manhattan or the Empire State Building all iconic images of New York.
Visual representations of New York will be discussed by an expert on American History at a public lecture at the University of Leicester.
Professor Douglas Tallack is Head of the College of Arts, Humanities and Law and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Leicester. His lecture will focus on the way images of New York were captured around the turn of the twentieth century and how they can be communicated to us today.
The Line of History: The Society of Iconophiles and New York City, 1894-1939 is based on Professor Tallacks current research and writing on the theme of Visual Commissions in New York City, 1870s-1920s, undertaken while a Grolier Club Fellow, and with the support of the Arts and Humanities Research Council. His published books and articles look at the visual representation of New Yorks City streets and parks as well as neighbourhoods, plots of undeveloped real estate, central terminals, subway platforms and people by journeyman illustrators and artists amongst others.
During this period, he observes, commissions motivated and structured the complex process of envisaging a city through engravings, paintings, posters amongst other media. By analysing core theoretical issues through selected visual commissions, and by reconstructing core issues such as visual commissions and analysing them with the formal rigour usually reserved for art-works, my research seeks to make images communicate again, across the years.
My lecture will focus on the journey of the members Society of Iconophiles, formed in 1894 by William Loring Andrews (1837-1920), in search of the historical and picturesque in order to preserve the historical heritage of New York City. To achieve this, the society stubbornly commissioned and published prints of sites threatened by redevelopment and also of historical events in the city and nations early history.
This was at a time when the onset of photography relegated intaglio engraving to the backwaters of visual. The background to all of this was the fact that it was during the turn-of-the-century period of dramatic growth when New York was becoming the most pictured city in the world.
Professor Tallack is twice winner of the Arthur Miller Prize for the best American Studies article of the year, and is the author of three monographs and four edited books. He directed the 3Cities project, funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council.
The lecture will take place in the Ken Edwards Building, Lecture Theatre 1 and is free to the public.
