Junior Road Safety Officers launch new school year

Photo Opportunity: New Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) from around the County will be presented with a certificate, badge and Road Safety Pack at a series of presentation evenings starting next week. (There are four presentations taking place at County Hall at 6:30 pm on Monday 5th; Tuesday 6th; Wednesday 14th and Tuesday 27th October 2009)

The presentations are taking place to launch the start of the Junior Road Safety scheme for the new school year.

Leicestershire County Council first introduced the Junior Road Safety Officer initiative in 1987 to promote road safety awareness in and around the county’s schools.

The scheme is offered to primary schools in the County and, at present, around three quarters of all local primary schools take part.

Each year, two students in their final year of primary school, aged 10 or 11 are selected to take up the role of Junior Road Safety Officers on behalf of their school.

The JRSOs are encouraged to promote road safety to their fellow students, by maintaining notice boards giving, information and advice on being aware and staying safe.

Chairman of the County Council, Roger Wilson, commented:

“This scheme is a fantastic way of teaching children about the importance of road safety and is a great way of getting children involved in teaching their  friends and colleagues about how they to can stay safe on our roads.”
