Miners’ Mornings Talks at Snibston

Snibston Discovery Museum is set to launch a series of Miners’ Mornings, a range of mining-themed talks from a variety of experts.

The sessions, starting on Thursday 15th October with ‘Landscape Evidence for Coal Mining in North West Leicestershire’ by Denis Baker, will be held regularly on the third Thursday of each month, from 10.30am until 12pm.

Located on the site of Coalville’s former colliery, Snibston recognises the importance of the area’s mining heritage, and is keen to develop relationships with local historians and experts to ensure the links are maintained.

Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Museums said: “It is essential that local history is accessible to all and is as engaging as possible. Snibston’s provision of these mornings is essential to keeping the spirit of mining alive in Leicestershire.  It gives people the opportunity to learn something new, reflect on memories and the past, and to celebrate the county’s heritage with like-minded people”.

Future talks include:

  • Thursday 19th Nov 2009 10.30-12.00

George Stephenson and the Creation of Snibston Colliery - Fred Hartley, Keeper of Working Life, Leicestershire County Council

  • Thursday 17th Dec 2009 10.30-12.00

Snibston Colliery Railway – Nick Pell, Curator of Mining and Transport, Leicestershire County Council

  • Thursday 21st Jan 2009 10.30-12.00

Mining subsidence - Alan Ratcliffe

Each session costs £3.50 per person to include tea, coffee and biscuits. Pre-booking is required by calling 01530 278444
