Leicester festival celebrates the written word

Posted on 09/10/09
University of Leicester

Following the overwhelming success of last years Literary Leicester Festival, the University of Leicester is about to produce another spectacular array of literary readings, talks and presentations on 11th-14th November.

Events take place in and around the award-winning David Wilson Library, opened last year by Her Majesty the Queen.

The Festival opens with poetry readings by the eminent poet, writer and broadcaster Peter Porter (11th November). He has published 16 widely acclaimed poetry collections and among the awards he has received are the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the Whitbread Poetry Award and the 2002 Queens Gold Medal for Poetry. His most recent collection, Better than God, has been shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Poetry Collection of the Year.

Other Festival highlights will include the distinguished critic, reviewer, broadcaster and author John Carey on William Golding: How Novels Happen (11th November); and a panel of four of the UKs most exciting professional writers for television (12th November), who will discuss how they entered the profession, how television scripts are commissioned, the challenges of slotting into long-running TV series, the different demands of television, film and stage, and opportunities for young writers.

Equally unmissable are An Evening with R J Ellory (14th November), whose latest book The Anniversary Man, a chilling tale of serial murder, is published by Orion in September 2009; and Sarah Waters in Conversation with Emma Parker (12th November). Sarah Waters is the author of the award-winning trilogy of Victorian novels Tipping the Velvet, Affinity and Fingersmith. Her latest novel, The Little Stranger, has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2009.

Fresh from their recent success at the Edinburgh Fringe, Leicester University Theatre present A Celebration of Harold Pinter (14th November), performing a range of extracts from the distinguished Nobel Prize-winning playwrights plays and poems.

Saturday 14th November is also a time for children (and the young at heart). They can come and hear the acclaimed childrens writer Jacqueline Wilson read from her latest book Hetty Feather and ask her questions about her work. They can also meet the award-winning author Meg Rosoff, who will talk about her books, including the much-anticipated fourth novel, The Bride's Farewell, published by Penguin in September.

For young lovers of traditional tales Pekkos Puppets will perform two best-loved fairy tales, Red Riding Hood and The Princess and the Pea.

Christine Fyfe, University Librarian and a Festival organiser, said: We are thrilled that so many top writers are heading to the University of Leicester for our second Literary Leicester Festival, promising an inspiring celebration of the arts of writing and reading.

All events are free of charge, but for some entry is by ticket only. For tickets please contact Rebecca Vickerman on 0116 252 2320 or rv40@le.ac.uk. Full details of all events can be found on: www.le.ac.uk/literaryleicester.
