Future of House of Lords under scrutiny

Posted on 09/10/09
University of Leicester

Lord Bingham of Cornhill, one of the most influential judges in the last 100 years, will present the third annual Jan Grodecki School of Law Lecture, The House of Lords: its future? on Thursday 22 October at the University of Leicester.

Law School Professor David Bonner said:

We are delighted to have the most prominent judge of his generation share with us his experience and wisdom on major constitutional matters.

Lord Bingham occupied several of the most senior judicial offices, including Lord Chief Justice and Senior Law Lord in the House of Lords, during his long career in which he helped mould developments of the law in a rapidly changing constitutional and legal order. He also played a significant role in the establishment of the UK Supreme Court, which from this month, has taken over from the House of Lords as the countrys highest court.

Professor Bonner commented:

The reform of the House of Lords as the second chamber of Parliament remains high on the political and constitutional agenda. With such a background in constitutional affairs and comparative law, no speaker could be better qualified to talk about the future of that House, and indeed whether it should have a future.

The Jan Grodecki lectures are named after a leading law Professor who helped to shape the study of Law at the University of Leicester. Professor Grodecki joined the University in 1965 as the foundation Chair of Law. He was Head of the Department from 1968 to 1973, and went on to become Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Law at the University from 1973-76. Jan Grodecki died in 2006 and a part of the School of Law at Leicester is also named after him.

The House of Lords: its future? lecture will take place on Thursday 22 October, at 5:30pm in the New Lecture Theatre, South Wing, Fielding Johnson Building. It is free and open to the public.
