Loughborough School Children Switch On

Schools across Loughborough and the rest of Charnwood are gearing up to get involved in an energy saving campaign taking place next week.
A number of schools across the borough are monitoring their energy use and recording how much they have saved during the Big Switch Off (BSO) which runs from October 12-18.
Youngsters will make an extra effort to take measures to cut their energy use such as switching off standby buttons on TVs and computers, turning off chargers that are not being used and switching off lamps in rooms which are unoccupied.
The Mayor of Charnwood Cllr Roy Brown (Conservative councillor for Sileby) has recorded a vodcast (video broadcast), which was filmed by pupils from Rawlins Community College in Quorn. It will be posted on the councils website at the start of the event and can be played in school assemblies.
In it he explains about the week-long campaign and talks about the importance of doing our bit for the environment. Another vodcast by the mayor will be aired at the end of the BSO.
Schools which will battle it out to see who saves the most energy include Roundhill Community College in Thurmaston, Limehurst High in Loughborough, Mountfields Lodge, Loughborough, The Latimer Primary, Anstey, and Newcroft Primary in Shepshed.
Last year The Latimer Primary School won a countywide schools challenge by saving an astounding 69 per cent in energy during the Big Switch Off.
Teacher at Mountfields Lodge, which is hoping to save as much energy as possible during this years event, Clare Rudkin, said: We are really looking forward to taking part in this years Big Switch Off.
It will be good to see if our eco awareness has had an impact on our energy use.
Cllr David Slater, Climate Change Champion at Charnwood Borough Council, said: I am delighted that schools across the borough are taking part in this years Big Switch Off.
I think it is important that we get into the mind-set of being energy efficient and doing our bit for the environment from a young age.
By taking simple measures we can all save energy, and money, at the same time.
Mayor of Charnwood Cllr Roy Brown said: I hope people will take some time to visit our website and have a look at the vodcast.
The Big Switch Off is something we can all take part in and I urge us all to join in and do our small bit for the environment.
Measures you can take to reduce your energy consumption include:
Turning off phone chargers that are not in use
Switching off standby buttons on TVs, computers and games consoles
Only boiling the amount of water in kettles which is needed
Turning off lamps in rooms which are unoccupied and not used for security purposes.
Anyone living in Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland can take part in the BSO. If you would like to join in, sign up to an e-pledge by visiting www.leics.gov.uk/bigswitchoff
Cllr Roy Browns vodcasts will be available at: www.charnwood.gov.uk
The Big Switch off is a partnership lead by ENABLE and local authorities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, together with the rural Community Council, Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire and Central Networks.

Notes:
- Charnwood schools that have registered an interest in taking part in the BSO include:
Limehurst High School, Loughborough
Newcroft primary School Shepshed
St Marys Catholic Primary School, Loughborough
Mountfields Lodge Primary School, Loughborough
Queniborough Church of England Primary School
Roundhill Community College, Thurmaston
Robert Bakewell Primary School & Community Centre
St Pauls Primary School, Woodhouse Eaves
Holywell Primary School, Loughborough
Latimer Primary School
Thorpe Acre Junior School
- It has been estimated that an average household can save up to 37 per year alone just by turning off appliances that have been left on standby.
- If each householder in the county switched off standby every year we could save on average 13,186,541!
- This is equal to 21,315 tonnes of carbon, which could fill 444,352 double decker buses.
There will be a Big Switch Off stall in the Thursday market day on 15th October 2009, where people can receive energy efficiency advice, take the Big Switch Off pledge and pick up a poster or tea towel.
