New parking controls considered for west Loughborough

New parking controls for streets close to Loughborough University will be considered by Leicestershire County Council’s Highways Forum for Charnwood tonight (Tuesday).

A report to be considered by the forum is recommending the controls after a questionnaire about parking was sent to 3,000 properties in west Loughborough and a series of public exhibitions was held.

Councillors commissioned an extensive parking study in the area after hearing increasing concerns from residents about mounting levels of parking linked to the university.

The West Loughborough Parking Study, which covered most of the streets close to the university campus, included surveys of parking levels and opportunities for residents to have their say through the questionnaire, public meetings, focus groups and public exhibitions.

For many of the streets the proposals will offer the benefit of permit parking, with permits only being made available to residents and their visitors.

There are already six similar schemes operating in central Loughborough and these have been very effective in protecting the quality of life in residential streets.

The case for permit control is not supported in all areas and in some locations it is recommended that controls are limited to yellow lines to protect junction areas, bends and turning spaces.

Matthew Lugg, Director of Highways and Transportation at Leicestershire County Council, said: “Many residents are telling us that effective parking measures are needed on their streets close to the university and this study has helped inform us of the detail of those problems and also helped inform residents of the available options.

“ I am very pleased that local residents have taken up the opportunity to work with our highway and traffic engineers so that we can now bring forward together the proposals for formal consultation.”

The next step will be to prepare details of the proposals for advertisement.
