Highways trainees receive awards

Two graduate trainees have received awards for being top of their programme.

Leicestershire County Council’s Highways, Transportation and Waste Management department credited the trainees in a presentation at County Hall on 7th October.

Michael Wetwood, 21 from Leicester received the Trainee Road Worker of the Year award and Sarah-Jane Purnell ,21, from Whetsone was named Trainee Technician of the Year.

Michael, who is on a two year Construction Awards Alliance (CAA) course in Highways Maintenance, started with the Highways Department in September 2007.

Sarah-Jane initially started as an Administration Apprentice in September 2006, transferring to a Trainee Civil Engineering Technician on the Highways Training scheme in September 2007.

Being on the scheme has given Sarah-Jane the opportunity to attend college once a week as well as spend time working in different areas of the department to gain the skills and knowledge required to work towards becoming a civil engineer.

Sarah-Jane this year has completed her National Certificate (BTEC) in Construction achieving eight merits and three passes and in September she started studying for a HNC in Civil Engineering.

As well as studying at college Sarah-Jane completed a City and Guilds award in AutoCAD being the first student ever at Leicester College to achieve 100 per cent!

The two awards were introduced in 2007 when Paul Deacon, a former assistant director for the Highways Branch, donated the plaques on his retirement.

Lesley Pendleton, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said ”The Highways Branch runs an extensive training and development programme and prides itself on the achievements of its staff."

“Nearly 50 staff were commended for achieving a professional qualification this year and we hope that our Trainees of the Year will be encouraged and motivated to continue their future careers within the County Council."
