Labour Candidate Takes The Pledge to End Poverty Now

Eric Goodyer, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Charnwood has signed the pledge To Stand Up, Take Action & End Poverty Now. This was the result of an approach by Glenfield Methodists who are part of a worldwide campaign to seek support for an end to world poverty, through a real commitment to fulfil the Millennium Development Goals.

This weekend's events go under the title "The Great Persuasion" and the aim was to "Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now" by presenting our politicians with a "Manifesto for International Development" co-ordinated by BOND, an organisation representing British charities. www.bond.org.uk

The week-end's activities were organised by representatives of the Glenfield Churches www.glenfieldchurches.org.uk , and was in response to this week's announcement that more than 1 Billion people go to bed hungry every day (more than 1 in 7 of the world's population).

The pledge asks:

That our leaders ACT NOW to achieve and exceed the "Millennium Development Goals" spending at least 0.7% of our Gross National Income on Aid and that we direct it to the poorest countries.

That we end hunger, and recognise the right of all people to

- decent work and income,

- safe water and sanitation,

- education and health,

- social protection and political freedom.

The pledge also asks everyone to help in this cause

"Whilst we call on our leaders to act courageously to increase the aid we give, we also pledge ourselves to buying Fairly Traded goods, Reducing our carbon footprint, and giving joyfully and generously to those in real need whoever and wherever they are."

Stephen Wadsworth, who is helping to organise the The Pledge campaign in our area said

"I am delighted that the politicians in Charnwood Constituency have received the Manifesto for International Development and promised to pass a copy on to the people in their parties who will be drawing up the next election manifestos".
