Coin scam in Loughborough

Police in Loughborough are hoping the general public will help them solve two crimes which involved large quantities of commemorative coins.

The suspect has been selling Charles and Diana Royal Wedding coins to vulnerable elderly people at a retirement complex on Craddock Street in Loughborough.

The coins were produced by the Royal Mint in 1981 to celebrate the wedding of HRH Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. They are not legal tender and have a minimal value.

However, over 25 of these coins have been sold to residents at the complex in recent months at a much higher value. Police were alerted to the scam by management at the complex who were concerned that someone was taking advantage of some of the more vulnerable residents.

PC Matt Garside who is investigating the incidents said: “This is a large number of commemorative coins and we think that this might hold the clue to tracking down the person responsible. We can understand why families might have one or two coins in their possession but a couple of dozen coins would be uncommon

“Have you recently sold a large batch of Charles and Diana coins to someone? Do you know anyone who has a large collection? Do you know where someone might buy a bulk of these coins either in Leicester or online?

“Do you collect or deal in commemorative coins? Do you know where someone might have got such a large number? Have you or any of your family members been approached to purchase similar coins?

“Even the smallest details could be really helpful. This person is deliberately preying on elderly vulnerable people. We’re determined to find them and bring them to justice. We hope the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland will be able to help”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 2854 Matt Garside from Loughborough LPU on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in his identification number 2854. Alternatively, people can call Crimestoppers free* and anonymously on 0800 555 111.
