Space instruments provide evidence of the warming of the Earths surface temperature
Posted on 23/10/09
University of Leicester
Scientists at the University of Leicester, collaborating with other organisations in the UK and overseas, are at the forefront of a science team manufacturing instruments designed to monitor climate change from space. The design and construction of the Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) instruments has been led by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory who, today, are hosting a symposium and dinner to discuss the findings of these instruments.
The space instruments deliver a consistent record of temperatures which provide an accurate picture of the Earths climate. The preliminary results show a very clear, unequivocal warming of the Earths surface temperature between the early 1990s and today. For the first time, interim results taken from the first series of instruments designed specifically to measure climate change will be shown as a data set of the long-term changes in average global sea-surface temperature.
The ATSR are the most accurate space instruments in the world for temperature measurements, offering the highest precision and stability, measuring the surface temperature of the sea. The ATSR instruments encompass a series of three radiometers which have been in space monitoring the surface temperature since 1991. The devices have been constructed in the UK, with help from Australia and the European Space Agency who have been responsible for building, launching and operating the three satellites which have carried the ATSR instruments.
Principal Investigator for the ATSR probes, Professor David Llewellyn-Jones from the University of Leicesters Physics and Astronomy Department commented:
We have managed to bring about a very challenging transition, from scientific experiment to operational monitoring instrument. The ATSR series of instruments have been a real triumph to the many people who have contributed to their development. We are delighted that the European Space Agency has taken up the responsibility of maintaining their continuity and building their own version.
The Department for Energy and Climate Change have funded the work on the most recent ATSR instrument. The results from this satellite will be discussed at todays (22 October) symposium and dinner hosted by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire.
