A spotlight on moths and their study

A free lecture on the world of moths and people who study them is being held next month.

'The History of Moth-ers and Mothing' tells the story of lepidopterists and how local recorders help record these night time winged wonders.

The event is being organised by Leicestershire County Council as part of the Discover Like Darwin programme of events, which has celebrated the 200th anniversary year of the birth of the scientist, Charles Darwin.

This latest informative, illustrated lecture is with local enthusiast Graham Finch and will include tips on identifying moths and ways local people can get involved in studies.

Mr Ernie White, Lead Member for Museums said, “Events aim to increase awareness of the natural world and raise the profile of activities that inspire scientific exploration and observation of the environment and wildlife. The programme has allowed us to work with many local naturalists, who share their local experience.”

Sessions are also linked to museum collections and there is a chance to view some of the specimens held by the service, including small handling specimens.

The talk is being held at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 4th November at Holly Hayes Environment and Heritage Resources Centre, 216 Birstall Road, Birstall.

Booking for the event is essential as places are limited. For further information or to book a place, contact the Museums Collection team telephone: 0116 305 4102 or 0116 305 3726, email museums@leics.gov.uk or visit www.leics.gov.uk/darwin
