Chairman to present sports grants to young talented athletes

Photo Opportunity: The Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Mr Roger Wilson, will welcome a group of talented young athletes to receive sports grants from the County Council. The presentation will take place on Tuesday 3rd November at County Hall. (Photographers are welcome to attend at around 6.30pm)

The Talented Athlete Fund – GO GOLD, supported by Leicestershire County Council and managed by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, are awarded to local athletes who are in full-time education and who are competing at a high level within their sport.

The impressive array of young people who will receive awards cover such sports as, swimming, athletics, cycling, snowsport, football, hockey, and trampolining. Many of the athletes are already competing at a national level and are training hard to ensure they have the best possible chance of having the opportunity to represent their country at international events and hopefully at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Roger Wilson , Chairman of the County Council, said:

"It is very pleasing to be able to support local athletes and a pleasure to meet them and to learn more about their particular sports and achievements – we all wish them well in the future and hope to see more of them as we get closer to the London 2012 Olympics".
