Ashby zebra crossing set to earn its stripes
Posted on 30/10/2009
Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
Pupils returning to an Ashby school after the half-term break can use a brand new zebra crossing introduced to boost road safety.
The crossing on Tamworth Road close to Ashby Willesley Primary School was completed during the holiday to avoid disruption to children and their parents.
The County Council project costing £40,000 also involves a new, improved road surface.
The crossing has been put in following a request from the school for better facilities as part of their school travel plan. It has been made possible by £11,500 funding from Sustrans.
Lesley Pendleton, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “We hope these new improvements will encourage more children to walk to school. Walking is a much healthier alternative to getting dropped off in a car and reduces congestion around the school gates.
"The safety improvements will not only benefit children and their parents but will aid the work of our School Crossing Patrol. The crossing will also aid residents of a nearby nursing home.”

Photo Opportunity:
Lesley Pendleton and School Crossing Patrol, Yvonne Jivraj, will join children from the school to try out the new crossing on Monday, November 2nd at 1.20pm.
The crossing is on Tamworth Road, Ashby, in between Packington Nook Lane and Grange Close.
Notes:
A school travel plan is essentially a series of steps to reduce the number of cars at the school gate, by encouraging healthier and greener alternatives to the school journey, such as walking, cycling or taking the bus. They are developed between the school and the County Council.
