Turf cut at new Barwell community centre
Posted on 02/11/2009
Chief Executive's
Building work started today on a new, state-of-the-art community centre in Barwell.
The ultra-modern, £2million George Ward Centre will offer a meeting place and activities for young people, job training and skills sessions, a sports hall, ICT suite and meeting and training rooms.
Residents' views and needs have helped shape the project and today (Monday), County Council Leader David Parsons cut the first turf.
Local teenagers have played an instrumental part in designing the youth wing and in line with their views, it will include a mural wall, a plasma screen, table football and games consoles.
The development will also be the new home to Barwell Library and include a focus on learning for all ages.
The new centre will replace The Cedars, a building given to the County Council for community use in 1946 by local benefactor George Ward, which closed in 2002.
The plans are based on a survey of local community needs and has been developed with a group of residents called with George Ward Community Project.
David Parsons, Leader of Leicestershire County Council, said: "The George Ward Centre will offer something for everyone in the community including mothers and toddlers, teenagers and older people who want to learn new skills and take part in a range of activities.
"The views of local people are at the heart of its design and I'm looking forward to seeing the building emerge over the next few months."
Maureen Cook, Chair of the George Ward Community Project, said: "We are really excited to see our new community building going up. The new centre will provide a base for activities and services for everyone in Barwell and we can’t wait until it opens next year.”

Notes:
David Parsons cut the first turf alongside members of the George Ward Community Project and construction company Galliford Try.
Barwell Community Centre is being built off Church Lane.
The County Council centre is expected to open next spring and is being built by Galliford Try on a site close to the junior school, near the centre of the village.
Work to prepare the site started in August.
In 1948 local business man and benefactor, George Ward, gave The Cedars, his house and its grounds to Leicestershire County Council for the community. In 2003, the County Council Cabinet made a commitment to invest the proceeds from the sale of The Cedars into a new community building for Barwell.
Earl Shilton and Barwell is one of 19 priority neighbourhoods identified within Leicestershire.
