Park, ride and go green
Posted on 02/11/2009
Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
A state-of-the-art, low-energy building bursting with innovative green features is being unveiled at a brand new park and ride.
The new terminus at the £9.2million Enderby facility incorporates ground source heat technology which works by harnessing warmth from the earth to generate power and boost efficiency.
The system will cut heating costs and energy consumption by up to 15% as well as reduce carbon emissions.
A geo-thermal ground source heat pump will provide heating, cooling and hot water and sensors will also adjust temperatures and ventilation as required.
Next Tuesday (3rd November), a ceremony is being held to mark the completion of the building at the new 1,000 space park and ride which is due to open in mid November.
The joint City and County Council scheme will offer low-emission buses running every few minutes in Leicester city centre and reduce the number of cars on the road.
Earlier this month, the park and ride scooped a prestigious eco award at the regional Constructing Excellence Awards.
Lesley Pendleton, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “This park and ride is a flagship site, offering convenient parking for commuters, shoppers and sports fans. The techniques used in its construction are innovative and forward-thinking and this has been recognised through its recent award win.”
Leicester City Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Councillor Patrick Kitterick, added: “The new facility will benefit both City and County residents, by offering quick and easy access into the city centre.
"Journeys will be swift because the route will make use of existing bus lanes to avoid traffic congestion. It will help to cut congestion on city and county roads, which should have a positive impact on the reduction of noise and pollution.”
When it opens on 16th November, buses will run every ten minutes from 7am to 7pm Mondays to Saturdays. Stops will include St. Nicholas Place, Leicester Royal Infirmary and De Montfort University.
