Last week Andy Reed met Olympian Jonathan Edwards at the House of Commons to discuss how Loughborough can benefit from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The session was an opportunity for MPs and Peers to meet the London 2012 Organising Committee that stages the Games, the Olympic Delivery Authority that builds the venues, and the Midlands 2012 teams working on the ground to ensure the benefits are spread across the region.

Some of the opportunities discussed included:

Local businesses winning Games-related contracts already 76 firms have won business, securing Midlands jobs

Pre-Games Training Camps across the region attracting overseas teams to train leading up to the Games 64 Midlands facilities are currently bidding

Participation in the Cultural Olympiad earlier in the Summer, 126 community events were held across the region as part of London 2012 weekend

Over 1,000 schools and colleges from across the Midlands have signed up to Get Set, London 2012s Education Programme

The Midlands is looking to host some of the rounds of the football tournament in 2012, with many venues across the region bidding for the opportunity

The Midlands looks set to play an integral role in the years leading up to the Games, and will be left with a lasting sporting and commercial legacy well beyond 2012.

Jonathan said:

I was delighted to meet Andy, its great to see such a level of interest and enthusiasm for the 2012 Games amongst MPs and Peers from across the Midlands. We will be working closely together as we build towards 2012 to ensure that the East and West Midlands maximise the benefits presented by the Games - before, during, and for many years to come.

Andy said:

The Olympics is a great opportunity for all the country and I am supporting businesses and groups from the midland in their work for the 2012 games. We have opportunities to exploit and I want to help them do that.
