Life beyond the death penalty

Human Rights will come under the spotlight at the University of Leicesters School of Law with a public lecture entitled Life Beyond the Death Penalty.
This is part of a series of events in the Human Rights Lecture Series, a highly successful series of events organized by the Centre for European Law and Integration (CELI) and taking place for a fourth consecutive year at the University of Leicester.
On Wednesday 11 November, James Heenan from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights will be visiting the University to give the free public lecture. The event is taking place in the School of Law, Fielding Johnson Building, room L66, at 5.00pm. It will be chaired by Professor Mark Bell.
James Heenan said: The lecture will be addressing the question of the death penalty that has been a feature of practically every legal system. The last 50 years has however seen a concerted effort to move beyond the death penalty by restricting its use within a human rights framework.
In my talk, I shall examine the following questions: Have we moved beyond the death penalty and how? Is the issue still relevant domestically for an abolitionist country like Britain? And what are the human rights challenges once we move beyond judicially-sanctioned executions?
James Heenan works for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. He has published extensively on issues of human rights and international labour law.
