Dora the Explorer will be the guest of honour at Loughboroughs Christmas Lights switch on this year which takes place on Sunday, November 29.

The switch will be flicked on at 5pm at an extravaganza in the Market Place where there will be fair rides, bands, local choirs and a host of other festive entertainment.

The much-loved childrens TV character Dora will be joined by her cousin Diego in the town at the event, which has been organised by Loughboroughs Town Centre Partnership and Charnwood Borough Council, from noon until 6pm. BBC Radio Leicester will be running competitions and entertaining the crowds as well as assisting with the showdown of singers who entered this years Charnwoods Got Xmas Talent contest ready to win over the crowds when the competitions grand final is held.

A host of activities will take place in Loughborough every Sunday following the switch on in the run-up to December 25.

A number of shops will open late on Wednesdays so people can bag the best Christmas gifts.

Free parking will be offered on these nights after 5.30pm and on Sundays at Charnwood Borough Council car parks and Carillion Court (excluding Browns Lane).

Craft and farmers markets will also be held in Loughborough throughout December and there will also be festive activities such as carol singing, Yuletide competitions and family fun.

On Sunday, December 13 a Cultural Day will be held in the town centre which will include the Charnwoods Got Xmas Talent dance final.

Make sure you pick up your very own 12 Days of Christmas leaflet when shopping in Loughborough so you know whats on and when.

Lead Member for Culture and Leisure at Charnwood Borough Council Peter Lewis said: Such splendid fun, shared by so many, means we all come together to enjoy ourselves in the heart of the town. On these festive occasions were part of a much stronger community of neighbours and friends. Its also good for our hard pressed shops and market traders. They need and deserve our support. Working together as a Town Centre Partnership now and in 2010, well ring in the changes every one of us hopes and have worked for.
