Bid to beat the burglars in South Charnwood

A campaign has been launched in a bid to reduce burglary in South Charnwood.

This week an advertising van emblazoned with the slogan lock it or lose it will do the rounds in Birstall, Mountsorrel, Syston, Anstey and Thurmaston.

It is hoped the eye-catching message will encourage residents in the area, which has seen a rise in burglary in recent weeks, to think about home security.

The following week members of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, which has organised the initiative, will be door knocking in the Gates estate area of Birstall, where they will hand out crime prevention leaflets and special pens which residents can use to mark their property with.

Cllr David Snartt, Chairman of Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, said: This campaign was launched to tackle burglary following a number of break-ins over the past few weeks.

Burglars in Charnwood should take note that we are keeping them constantly in our sights and they will end up suffering the consequences unless they turn their back on crime.

We are determined to drive down this type of crime but we cant do it without the help of residents within Charnwood. I cannot stress enough how important it is for householders to lock doors and windows behind them, even when they are in, as one in three burglaries happen in this way.

Also, use your alarm if you have one and leave a light on when you go out to make it look like someone is in.

Inspector Duncan Southall, Charnwood Local Policing Unit Commander, said:

This joint campaign, with our partners in the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, has two clear messages. To our communities:

Dont allow yourself to become a victim by taking some simple measures:

Lock doors and windows.

Dont leave car keys or handbags near doors and windows.

If you are going away, use a timer to switch lights on and off.

Dont open the door to unexpected callers, use a door chain and check them out first.

If you have an alarm use it.

Look out for your neighbours and their property.

Report ANY suspicious activity to the Police (day or night) on 01162 222 222 or 999.

And to our criminals:

Covert and overt Officers and vehicles (including mobile Automatic Number plate Recognition) are actively out looking for you.

Keep looking over your shoulder you and your vehicles will be targeted.

Think twice before coming to Charnwood and committing crime.
