An event is being held to highlight a project designed to enable older people to die with dignity.

Tomorrow's event will thank all partners involved in DALE (Decisions At Life's End) which aims to help older people, along with their families and carers, to make choices about where they want to die.

The project has enabled an increased number of people to fulfil their choice of having a dignified death in their own home surrounded by their family and friends, rather than in hospital.

DALE and its services are embedded in the community nursing service and are available to patients of all ages in Leicestershire through Leicestershire County and Rutland Community Health Services (LCRCHS).

David Sprason, County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “It is a tribute to everyone involved that the services offered by the DALE project are now part of the mainstream services available to the residents of Leicestershire.

"We all strive to ensure that people are offered the widest possible choice of services and that they are treated with respect and dignity at this most crucial time. I feel that we should all be proud of what the DALE project has achieved.”

DALE covers Leicestershire and Rutland and provides locality-based services, consisting of additional trained nurses, integrated within an existing community teams supported by other local mainstream services such as Marie Curie and Hospice at Home.
