Neighbourhood Watch launches in Shelthorpe for the first time

PCSO Sue Exton with members of Neighbourhood Watch
A Neighbourhood Watch scheme has been set up on the Shelthorpe Estate in Loughborough for the first time.
Thanks to the hard work and persistence of the volunteers who work in the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) office at Loughborough police station they’ve managed to recruit a NHW Beat Manager, Sven Hallin, and five coordinators on the estate. The scheme is now operating on five streets and could expand further.
Jim Plowman, who has worked in the office for seven years, said; “We have wanted to set up a scheme on the Shelthorpe Estate for many years but have never been able to get one off the ground because we haven’t found anyone willing to volunteer. There isn’t a great deal of work involved but it clearly requires some time and dedication and I am thrilled that local people have become involved in Shelthorpe. We’ve got five streets covered now which includes about 153 people and we hope that, as word gets around, more people will sign up.”
Neighbourhood Watch works by developing close links between residents in a neighbourhood and the local police. It aims to help people protect themselves and their properties and to reduce the fear of crime by means of improved home security, greater vigilance, accurate reporting of suspicious incidents to the police and by fostering a community spirit.
Crime reports are prepared by volunteers in the local offices and passed to Beat Managers twice a week and they in turn pass on the details to relevant co-ordinators. Staff in the NHW office also provide advice and support to members and co-ordinators, free Home Office leaflets, and security devices (these are sold at discounted prices).
The Beat Manager, Sven Hallin, said; “I was quite happy to get involved as I am a great believer in Neighbourhood Watch. It is a good way to get to know your neighbours and people in the wider community. I keep the residents on my street informed about crime related issues that might affect them. I also wanted to get to know the local police beat officers and it has been fantastic from that point of view too. Essentially my role is to pass the relevant crime and security information on to other coordinators and help new people set up their own schemes. It would be great to have more schemes on the estate so I’d urge anyone who’d like to help out to get in touch.”
Large, bright yellow signs with the NHW meerkats on them will be put on lampposts in the area.
Anyone wishing to start a NHW scheme or wanting further information can visit or contact the NHW Offices between 9am and midday on Mondays and Thursdays (an answer phone is available outside of these hours).
