Winter Wader & Wildfowl Walk at Watermead

People can learn how to identify water birds, help out at Watermead, and have a guided tour of the country park this coming Sunday.

The rangers at Watermead Country Park (North) are leading a Winter Wader and Wildfowl Walk on Sunday, 15th November, which includes the annual survey of different bird species.

As the walk goes round the park the rangers will point out different types of birds and everyone will be given a survey form to do their own count. At the end of the walk everyone’s figures will be combined to give more accurate results.

The two-mile walk will start from the main King Lear’s car park off Wanlip Road, Syston, at 10.30am and will last for up to two-and-a-half hours.

It will begin with the Plover Hide to watch the waders. The walk includes Kings Lear’s Lake, which is good for grebes, and then the Meadow Pool to look at the many species of ducks.

Places are limited so booking is recommended by calling 0116 267 1944. The cost is adults £3, concessions £2. Car parking is an additional £1.50 per day. The money helps maintain and improve the park.

Binoculars are recommended. The walk includes some unsurfaced paths and people should wear suitable footwear and bring waterproof clothing. The Plover Hide is on two floors - there are steps to the upper storey but accessible ramps lead onto the ground floor. The walk is not appropriate for dogs.
