Nordic Walking launched in Charnwood

Posted on 11/11/09
newsdesk

Nordic walking sessions are being launched for anyone who would like to have a go at hiking with a twist.

Active Together Charnwood will run five-week courses at three venues in the borough starting next week.

Courses will be held in Loughborough, Birstall and Woodhouse Eaves and are aimed at those new to Nordic Walking, which involves using poles to help propel walkers along.

Instructors will spend time teaching participants the correct technique so they can make the most out of the sessions.

Nordic Walking introduces the upper body to walking, and also means the walker works harder although the support from the poles makes it feel easier.

It is suitable for all levels of fitness, is easy on the joints and the increased use of the upper body means you burn more calories than normal walking, helping to tone the whole body.

Cabinet Lead Member for Culture and Leisure at Charnwood Borough Council

Peter Lewis said: This is a brilliant opportunity to learn a new skill, increase your fitness and enjoy the wonderful countryside Charnwood has to offer.

I would encourage people to take advantage of these sessions and have a go at something a bit different while getting fit at the same time.

A five week course costs 12.50. For more information call 01509 634673.
