Big Switch Off saves energy
Posted on 11/11/09

Energy has been saved in Charnwood after residents took part in this years Big Switch Off.
People across the borough made an extra effort to unplug chargers that werent being used, turn off stand-by buttons on TVs and computers and switch off unnecessary lights during the campaign which took place from October 12-18.
Figures show that between them, Charnwood Borough Councils offices in Southfield Road, Loughborough and Loughborough Town Hall managed to reduce their energy consumption by approximately 10.5 per cent compared to the previous week - enough electricity to power the towns leisure centre for more than seven days.
Loughborough as a whole made a 30.8 megawatt saving, which equates to roughly 308,000 100 watt light bulbs being switched off for an hour.
A total of 20 schools across the borough were visited by Charnwood Borough Councils Big Switch Off team before the event in a bid to educate youngsters about how to save energy.
Students from Rawlins Community College in Quorn filmed Vodcasts (video broadcasts) from the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Roy Brown, about the Big Switch Off which were available for schools to show in assemblies before and after the event.
The school managed to save five per cent of its energy consumption during the week as a result of taking measures such as making sure computers and lights were turned off when they werent needed.
Assistant Principal Ted Walker said: We are very pleased we have got the Big Switch Off on our agenda and we will be working very hard to look at the various ways we can save energy in the future and make even more progress in making Rawlins greener.
Cllr Mike Preston, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said: I would like to congratulate everyone who made an extra effort to be more energy efficient during the Big Switch Off.
The Big Switch Off has highlighted the fact that by just by making a few simple changes to the way we live our day-to-day lives we can save energy - and money - at the same time.
Small measures can add up and make a real difference.
For more information on the Big Switch Off visit: The Big Switch off is a partnership lead by ENABLE (Environmental Action for a Better Leicestershire) and local authorities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, together with the rural Community Council, Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire and Central Networks.
