Youngsters take part in graffiti project
Posted on 13/11/2009
Eye catching designs have been created by teenagers who worked their magic when they took part in a graffiti project in Anstey.
Around 25 young people worked with youth workers and artists from Kolorblindesignz to create a colourful mural on the wall of a youth shelter near the village’s Jubilee Hall.
The week-long initiative was organised after Anstey Parish Council, which provides the shelter, contacted Leicestershire Youth Service which runs a detached project in the village.
Together they came up with the idea which aimed to give young people a sense of ownership of the space. A city scene, a breakdancer and a variety of caricatures are just some of the designs which have brought the wall to life.
Matt Brown (16) from Anstey tested his artistic skills by taking part in the project. He said: ''I had the most fun I have had on the park in memory and, at the same time, I learnt new things.''
Lauren Harris (16), also from the village, added: ''It was a very good experience because it was fun, and we learnt how to spray paint ''
Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Leicestershire County Council Ivan Ould said: “'This was a great piece of partnership work which saw everyone involved work really hard.
“I have been told the young people love the new look space that has been created. They should be proud of their achievements.”
“They worked really hard and love the new look space that has been created. It was great to see members of the public expressing their interest and praise for the positive work the young people were undertaking.''
Chairman of Anstey Parish Council, Martin Broomhead, said: "The youth shelter has recently been completed and is part of the wide variety of youth-related facilities provided by the Parish Council on the Recreation Ground in Anstey.
"It only seemed right that young people should be invited to decorate it with their own 'official' graffiti. It looks great! We were pleased to be able to work closely with the County Council on this project."
