Eminent archaeologist to lecture on work at world famous site

Posted on 17/11/09
University of Leicester

One of Britains most influential archaeologists is to give a free public lecture at the University of Leicester on his work at a world-famous site in Central Turkey.

Professor Ian Hodder, who teaches at Stanford University, will deliver the special lecture organised by the University of Leicesters School of Archaeology and Ancient History.

Professor Hodders lecture will focus on the world famous site of Catalhoyuk near Konya in central Turkey, where he has been excavating since 1993 as part of a 25-year project. This 9,000 year-old Neolithic site is amongst the earliest town-like settlements known anywhere in the world and was inhabited by up to 8000 people.

Excavation work has revealed a lot about the Neolithic site; there were no streets, people moved around on the roof tops and people made wonderful paintings and sculptures inside their houses. The works of art have survived across millennia, and are extraordinary well preserved.

Catalhoyuk has recently been proposed as a possible addition to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. Professor Hodders work aims to place the art from the site in its full context, to conserve the paintings and present the site to the public.

Professor Colin Haselgrove, Head of the University of Leicesters School of Archaeology and Ancient History, said:

Professor Ian Hodder is one of most innovative and influential archaeologists of modern times. Since 1996, Ian has been based in the USA, so Wednesdays lecture will be a rare opportunity for the public to hear about the results of his important new research at Catalhoyok, one of the most significant but enigmatic archaeological sites in the world

The lecture is taking place at 5.30pm on Wednesday 18 November in the Attenborough Film Theatre at the University of Leicester. It is free and open to all.
