Domestic abuse can devastate families and destroy lives but is hidden behind closed doors

Charnwood Borough Council and Loughborough Womens Aid have got together to host a series of events to raise awareness of domestic abuse which can affect men, women and children - and the fact there is help out there.

The initiative has been planned to coincide with Domestic Abuse Awareness Week which runs from November 23-28.

On Saturday, November 21 a stall will be set up in Loughborough Market dedicated to offering information about domestic abuse. A new leaflet will be available at the stall for shoppers which will outline information on services available in Charnwood for people who are affected and their families.

An advertising van will also be touring the borough during the week to raise awareness. It will be emblazoned with the slogan Are you safe from domestic abuse and will visit towns and villages including Loughborough, Shepshed, Hathern, Sileby, Quorn, Rothley, Birstall and Syston.

On Tuesday, November 24 a special screening of Grease at the Reel Cinema in Loughborough will raise money for Womens Aid. Tickets cost 5.50, 4.50 under 16s, and are available by calling 01509 550317 or emailing: Judith@lwa.org.uk

Basic domestic abuse training and will be offered to staff at Charnwood Borough Council and local agency staff during the week, as well as to delegates from Unite and Unison.

Michele Walker, Charnwood Domestic Abuse Coordinator at Loughborough Womens Aid said: Domestic abuse awareness week is a very important week for us - it highlights domestic abuse and the services available to residents in Charnwood.

One in four women and one in six men will experience domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is unacceptable, you are not alone help is available.

Lead Member for Community Safety at Charnwood Borough Council Cllr David Snartt said: We want people who are experiencing domestic abuse to know that help is out there.

This campaign is important in highlighting this message and we hope it will encourage people who are affected to not suffer in silence and seek help.

Domestic abuse is physical, emotional, sexual, mental or spiritual. It is all about control and how one person intimidates the other.

Loughborough Womens Aid supports victims and their families who experience domestic abuse and offers outreach support for women, men and their children. It can be contacted by calling 01509 552549.
