Courts sentence man found with forged football tickets
A 23-year-old man has been given a 12-month community order and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work after being found in possession of a stolen camera and fake Everton tickets.
Daniel Anthony Welsh of Stalmine Road, Liverpool, was arrested at East Midlands Airport on August 26, 2009. He was found in possession of 61 forged tickets for the SK Sigma Olomouic v Everton match due to take place the following day, and a camera that had previously been reported missing from the airport.
He was charged on October 22 and appeared before Loughborough Magistrates Court on November 6. The sentence is in addition to a four year football banning order which was sought by Everton Football Club and Merseyside Police.
PC Robert Beaken, from East Midlands Airport policing team, said: “There were so many possible implications from Welsh’s actions.
The tickets were allegedly for an area of the ground with only 461 seats. Had an extra 61 people travelled to the Czech Republic and been given access to the ground you can imagine the impact the extra bodies would have had in terms of the safety of those supporters.
“Or, fans with legitimate tickets could have been denied access to the ground or similarly people could have innocently bought the forged tickets thinking they were genuine.
“We’re just pleased we were able to stop him before he boarded the plane and put him before the courts. We’d also like to thank Merseyside Police and Everton for their support with the investigation.”
Everton drew the match 1-1 going through (5-1) on aggregate.
