A Beat Officer from Loughborough has been awarded for his off duty time spent helping the local community.

PC Gordon Doudie, one of the beat officers for the Hastings and Meadow Lane neighbourhood, has been awarded the Harry Wileman Memorial Rose bowl which recognises the commitment of police officers who spend their off duty time to benefit others.

Since re-joining Leicestershire Constabulary in September 2003 Gordon has been involved in youth projects on every beat he’s worked.  While a beat officer in Castle Donington he was heavily involved a local youth club, dedicating a lot of his own time and annual leave to support the Area Youth Worker in the planning and coordination of workshops and residential courses.  Gordon continues to offer support to this club especially in relation to working with vulnerable young adults.

In September 2008 Gordon became the Beat Officer for Sileby in Charnwood and he recognised that there was very little for local teenagers to do.  He worked with a voluntary organisation, called ‘Clubs for Young People,’ to set up a youth club and arranged for group of probationers to paint the inside of the building.  PC Doudie is still on the committee of that club despite moving to a new beat in Loughborough.

Over the years Gordon has been part of a team of police officers who have raised a lot of money for charity. More recently they did the Three Peaks Challenge raising more than £1000 for Rainbows Children’s Hospice and Gordon has cycled from Cumbria to Whitby raising £1500 for a young girl with Cerebral Palsy and he was part of a team that cycled across Scotland and raised £1000 for a young man who was involved in a life changing accident.

He now plans to run his own Army Cadet Detachment in Sileby as he served in the British Army for 11 years before becoming a police officer.

PS 1206 Jamie Osborne nominated Gordon Doudie for the award. He said; “Gordon truly believes that everyone should be given the best opportunities regardless of their background and that everyone should have a better quality of life.  He clearly portrays the police in an excellent light to the young community we work with. I feel that these efforts both in and out of work should be rewarded.

Inspector Tim McCabe, Commander of Loughborough Local Policing Unit said; “I fully support this nomination submitted by Ps Osborne.  Gordon Doudie is a most proactive officer both in and outside of work.  His involvement surrounding the youth community has made a noticeable difference in the areas that he has worked.”

PC Doudie said; “I am honoured to receive this award but I could not have done it without the support and help of work colleagues and members of the community in which I have served.  I get a great deal of pleasure doing things for the community and firmly believe that everyone deserves access to facilities that improve their quality of life and that applies in my job as a police officer and outside work too.”
