Accident-reducing road improvements in Hinckley

Work is starting on the second phase of a £110,000 road improvement scheme to reduce accidents along a key route in Hinckley.

The work on Dodwells Road and Normandy Way, which is being carried out by Leicestershire County Council, is due to start on Monday.

Improvements will include anti-skid surfaces laid at accident hot spots and new, consistent lining along the whole road.

This is the second part of the scheme, following the successful introduction of a right turn ban into Cornfield earlier this year. The improvements will be completed in the New Year with the introduction of lower speed limits between the A5 and the canal bridge.

The changes are being made following the results of a study which showed that 54 injury accidents occurred on Dodwells Road and Normandy Way between 2003 and 2006.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet lead member for highways and transportation, said: “Road accidents blight the lives of individuals and families. Reducing the number of casualties on our roads is a key driver of our local transport plan.

“Improvements to locations and routes where the number of accidents is particularly high, is a priority for the County Council.”

Weather permitting, work is due to start on 23 November and will last for approximately three weeks. As far as possible, work take place at night to keep delays to a minimum. Peak periods will be avoided.
