Launceston Road junction improvements begin

Work on a new road layout to ease traffic congestion is starting at a key junction in Wigston next week.

The £60,000 improvements to the junction of Station Road and Launceston Road include a new mini roundabout and an extension to the on-pavement cycle lane.

The new layouts are being introduced following concerns from residents and public transport operators about congestion at the junction.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet lead member for highways and transportation, said: “As well as installing a new mini roundabout to improve traffic flow through the junction, the extended cycling facilities will offer a safer journey to the many cyclists who use this route each day.

“The improvements will also make bus travel on Arriva routes 47 and 48 swifter, encouraging more people to use public transport. If more people use the bus there will be less cars on the road and this will benefit the environment.”

Work is due to start on 23 November and will continue for three weeks during off peak hours. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation.

Some additional work will also take place in the New Year where the junction will need to be closed. This is intended to take place during off peak hours and all work is expected to be completed by mid January.

Residents are advised to take care through the road works and adhere to the signs. Leicestershire County Council aims to all keep disruption to a minimum.
