Lest We Forget…

The Leader of the County Council, David Parsons will be opening a special event which is recording information on war memorials in Leicestershire and Rutland.

Over 50 volunteers will be showcasing their work which is part of a new project by Leicestershire County Council, which aims to record war memorials and service people from the area who have died, for the first time.

According to English Heritage, one of the greatest threats to war memorials is neglect, and Leicestershire County Council is taking action to prevent this.

The Leader of the County Council, David Parsons, said: “This is a groundbreaking project rooted in the community, and is a tribute to those lost in service. I am proud to be opening the event. It is a great way to show our respect for war memorials and appreciation for those currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

The project seeks to record the names of those who have fallen since the Second World War, and asks anyone with names to contact the project.

The yet unknown number of memorials, from stone crosses to stained glass windows, even church lighting and playing fields, may reach 1,000.

Volunteers have been provided with specially designed fieldwork packs to help them record, research and photograph war memorials, and look into the lives of the people they commemorate.

The results are expected to be very exciting, unearthing new information and original documents. Items on display will include books, photographs, documents and packs.

More information is also needed, if you would like to volunteer to record war memorials in your area please contact War Memorials Project Co-ordinator Elizabeth Blood on 0116 2670004 or e-mail: liz.blood@leics.gov.uk
