Enjoy a festive food freeze and save cash this Christmas
Posted on 01/12/2009
Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
County residents are being urged to make more use of their freezers this Christmas, to reduce shopping hassles and cut costs.
Eating food already stored in our freezers can reduce weekly shopping costs and clear space for festive food to be frozen over Christmas.
This festive season, Leicestershire Waste Partnership’s Love Food Hate Waste campaign is giving out tips on how to make the most of our freezers and encouraging people to visit them more often.
The national Love Food Hate Waste freezer campaign was launched on 26th November by comediene Sue Perkins. The website features party and Christmas portion calculators, fantastic festive recipes for any occasion and Arctic Aunt the agony aunt who solves all your freezer questions.
Over the next month, the Waste Prevention Team will be at Christmas markets and craft fairs across the county to give shoppers practical giveaways and handy advice to help reduce food waste.
Find them at the Melton Victorian Fayre from 9am - 4pm on Sunday, 6th December, Loughborough Market from 9am onwards on Friday, 11th December and Market Harborough town centre also on Friday, December 11th from 5pm - 8pm
Michael Rook, Chairman of Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said:
“Around 60 per cent of food waste sent to landfill is avoidable, so supporting the Love Food Hate Waste campaign is a great way of doing your bit to reduce this.
“I would urge people to come along the Christmas roadshows and find out more about how you can reduce food waste, help the environment and save money on your shopping bills at the same time.”
Clearing the freezer before Christmas makes room for staple foods to keep you going over the holiday period, such as milk and bread.
To find the Christmas roadshow dates, please visit www.lesswaste.org.uk or call 0116 305 7005. For more ways to help save money and enjoy more of the food we buy, go to www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
Notes
This promotion is part of Leicestershire Waste Partnership’s campaign to help prevent waste and raise awareness of recycling services over the festive season.
Campaigns being run by the District and Borough Councils and County Council are all using the ‘Dreaming of a green Christmas’ theme.
The Leicestershire Waste Partnership is made up of the seven districts of Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire, Oadby and Wigston, together with the County Council.
The Partnership has a clear vision for sustainable waste management. It aims to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill – by preventing waste in the first place, encouraging reuse, recycling and composting, and treating what’s leftover before disposal.
Working together, the partners aim to recycle or compost 58% of rubbish by 2017.
