Thumbs up for park and ride

Leicestershire’s new park and ride is proving popular with residents travelling into the city centre.

In the first week of service, over 1,500 passengers used the service from the award-winning Enderby terminus.

With an average journey time of 14 minutes to the hub at St Nicholas Place, buses make use of of existing bus lanes to avoid traffic congestion, making journeys swift and hassle-free.

Buses run every 10 minutes, from 7.00am to 7.00pm Mondays to Saturdays, travelling non-stop in to the city centre.

Once in the city they follow a loop where stops include Leicester Royal Infirmary and De Montfort University and St Nicholas Place. Stops on the loop are also convenient for football and rugby fans to make the most of the of the park and ride facility on match days.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet lead member for highways and transportation said: “The initial usage of the Park and Ride service has been very encouraging and passenger feedback on the quality of the service is good.

“The County and City Councils will now be working with retailers, employers and the Leicester Royal Infirmary along with the Leicester Tigers and Leicester City Football Club to promote the new timetable and encourage increased usage.

“At the same time we will be listening to partners’ aspirations for the service and looking at enhancements, when these are affordable.”

Leicester City Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Councillor Patrick Kitterick, added: “This flagship park and ride is proving to be a real asset for visitors, commuters, shoppers and sports fans.

“It offers a quicker and cheaper way into the city than a regular car journey. It is also starting to help to reduce pressure on the road network and cut congestion, traffic noise and pollution.

“By encouraging visitors into the city centre to see what Leicester has to offer, the Enderby park and ride will also contribute to the city’s wider regeneration.“

Timetables and voucher booklets including fare information are available by visiting www.quicksilverbus.co.uk or from libraries, service shops and tourist information centres, or by calling 0116 305 8777.
