Adult Social Care is performing well

Adult Social Care Service
Adult Social Care services in Leicestershire are performing well, according to an independent report.
The Care Quality Commission says the County Council is performing excellently in three out of seven categories and performing well in the remainder.
Leicestershire’s Adult Social Care department provides a range of services to enable people to maximise their independence and support their individual needs.
David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “I’m delighted that, despite this tough inspection regime, we’re performing well – and performing excellently in three out of seven categories.
“Our staff are delivering excellent services that people want and need and they are always working to make further improvements.”
The assessment report says that the service is excellent for:
• Improving people’s quality of life
• Making a positive contribution
• Increasing people’s choice and control
The report says the Council is performing well in:
• Improving people’s health and emotional well-being
•Providing freedom from discrimination and harassment
• Supporting economic well-being
• Maintaining personal dignity and respect
Key strengths include:
• Timely assessments and speedy provision of services for older people
• Excellent preventative services
• Increasing use of direct payments
• Working with employers to set standards for employing people with a disability
• A strong commitment to dignity in care
• Involving service users and carers in service development and design
• Partnership working with the NHS and other partners
• Making improvements in all outcome areas
Background: key facts about Adult Social Care
The department:
• spends £181 million per year to provide services to 18,300 people
• provides home care, care homes and day centres and provides services through the voluntary and private sector
• delivers hot meals to the homes of 970 people every day
• commissions direct payments to more than 1,000 people, to give them greater flexibility and choice over their care packages
Successes within the department include:
• HART, the Home Assessment and Reablement Teams, which support older people to become more independent. The scheme has been highlighted as best practice in a national report
• Learn2Earn, an initiative to support people with disabilities obtain training and jobs
• CareOnLine, an internet site for carers, older and disabled people, which was a finalist in the global Stockholm Challenge.
