Busy route benefits from bus & bike boost

One of the busiest routes into the city will benefit from £200,000 improvements which will be completed on Monday, December 7.

Leicestershire County Council has carried out improvements to the A6 (London Road) in Oadby between Asda and the city boundary, in a bid to cut congestion and encourage more people to take the bus or cycle.

Changes to the road include a new 24 hour bus lane (for city centre bound buses) and there is a big boost for cyclists with more on-pavement cycle lanes being added.

Lesley Pendleton, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “The A6 is a very busy route, with approximately 30,000 vehicles using the route every day.

“The dedicated bus lane will improve bus journey times, especially during the morning peak hours so passengers will benefit from a more punctual and reliable bus service.

“The long term goal is that more people will be encouraged to travel by bus in preference to the private car and, with less cars on the road, this will help to reduce congestion along this busy stretch of road which will also benefit the environment.

“Cycle users, particularly less confident riders, will feel less exposed on the new off-road cycling facilities than sharing the road with general traffic, whilst more confident cyclists can take advantage of the new bus / taxi / cycle lane.”

The new bus lane is being trialled on an experimental basis for six months, during which time people have the opportunity to comment on their experience of the new road layout.
