Future of 10 care homes to be discussed
Posted on 08/12/2009
Cabinet Office
Proposals to consult on the future of 10 care homes in Leicestershire are to be considered by the County Council.
The ruling Cabinet will decide on December 15th whether to consult residents, staff, care providers and others on proposals to transfer all its council-run homes to the independent sector, to help fund Extra Care schemes.
At the moment, the County Council runs 10 homes:
• Catherine Dalley House, Melton Mowbray
• Hadrian House, Thurmaston
• Huntingdon Court, Loughborough
• Harvey House, Barwell
• Kirby House, Kirby Muxloe
• Woodmarket House, Lutterworth
• Lenthall House, Market Harborough
• Curtis Western House, Wigston, plus its day centre
• The Limes, Hinckley, plus its day centre
• Tillson House, Coalville
The Council had hoped to transfer six homes to a single, not-for-profit consortium and to develop Extra Care – a scheme that helps people to live independently, but with on-site care and support.
Earlier this year, the consortium withdrew from discussions on the transfer, because of the impact of the recession.
Now, the Council is proposing to consult residents, their families, staff, unions, day centre users, the NHS and care providers, on:
• Providing an Extra Care and dementia residential care centre on Melton’s neighbouring Silverdale Hostel and Catherine Dalley sites, which could become a benchmark model for the rest of the county
• Transferring all nine remaining council-run homes and associated day centres to the independent sector
• Working with district councils and the Homes and Communities Agency to provide Extra Care in the rest of the county
David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care, said: “We want to end the uncertainty for residents, relatives and staff and we think that transferring homes to the independent sector is now the best way to achieve this.
“This would enable residents to remain in their current homes, while reducing costs and helping the Council to meet its target for savings.”
The Cabinet will discuss the report at 2pm on December 15th. If it agrees to go out to consultation, there will be a further report in the spring.
