Young carers' film hits silver screen

A group of budding Steven Spielbergs have written, directed and starred in a new film about life as a young carer.

The teenagers, from the Time Out Carers Project planned the project, wrote the story line and featured in the dvd which gives examples of issues facing some young carers.

Based at Mountfields Lodge Youth Centre in Loughborough, the County Council-run group offers support for young people aged between 11 and 19 who care for a relative who is ill.

The film, which is aimed at professionals, was launched at a special event and was made possible thanks to a grant from the Youth Opportunities Fund.

Ivan Ould, the County Council's Cabinet Member for the Children and Young People's Service, said: "This is an enlightening project which raises awareness of the issues faced by young carers.

"I'd like to congratulate all those involved who have put in a lot of hard work to produce this ground-breaking film."

One of the teenagers involved said: "I thought the launch was very successful and found that people left with a better understanding of what it's like to be a young carer."

Leicester-based Atmospheres provided support and filming expertise throughout the project.
