Boost for busy South Wigston junction

A £600,000 scheme to improve a busy South Wigston junction is set to get underway early next year.

The improvements involve replacing two mini-roundabouts with traffic signals to cut accidents at the staggered junction of Blaby Road/ Saffron Road/ Countesthorpe Road.

Crossings will also be put in to help the high volume of pedestrians, including a large number of children walking to nearby schools.

The work, due to begin on 4th January, is expected to finish in the spring and road closures and diversions will be in effect throughout.

Even though every effort has been made to minimise disruption delays are likely and drivers using South Wigston as a through-route are urged to find alternative routes, where possible.

All shops and businesses will remain open for business as usual during the work.

Most bus routes are planned to run as normal during this period, but may be subject to delays. Arriva service 85 will see one minor change – from Canal Street the service will turn left into Bassett Street and then left onto Countesthorpe Road, instead of turning at Blaby Road. Passengers wanting to catch the bus in this area should use the stops on Canal Street or Countesthorpe Road.

Lesley Pendleton, County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “These works will improve the safety of what is an extremely busy junction as well as providing new pedestrian crossings to benefit local residents and shoppers.”
