Recycle trees to boost woodland

Residents are urged to go green this new year by recycling their Christmas trees.

By taking a real tree to any of the County Council's 14 recycling and household waste sites, people can also help local woodland.

For every one taken to be recycled during January, the County Council will make a donation to Stepping Stones, a partnership which aims to create exceptional green spaces within Leicestershire and make them available to everyone.

Residents will also be entered into a competition to win up to £100 worth of high street shopping vouchers, which would be the ideal start to the new year.

Tony Kershaw, County Council Cabinet Member for Waste Management, said: "Around seven million real Christmas trees are purchased in the UK each year and I would urge anyone who cannot re-plant it in the garden to recycle it.

"By taking it to a recycling and household waste site and filling in a competition card, residents will also be supporting local and global tree-planting."

The scheme runs until 29th January 2010.
