Stunning Artwork Transforms the Local Environment in Hugglescote

Photo opportunity:

A four metre high stainless steel tree sculpture has been “planted”at Grange Road, Hugglescote and has transformed the local environment to complement existing trees on an attractive area of open space. A celebration of the installation of the new work is taking place on Wednesday 20th January 2010 at 3.30pm and will be led by the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Roger Wilson.

The sculpture has been made by artist Hillary Cartmel from Doncaster and draws on and features tree related artwork designed by local children and young people from Hugglescote Primary School, Newbridge High School and the U Youth Group and the Church Lads and Girls group that meet at Hugglescote Community Centre. Outstanding features of the tree are a ribbon of brass plaques on the trunk which reflect the community artwork and ribbons of cast glass inlaid into the branches.

Roger Wilson, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council’s, said:

“This project has been a great success thanks to the support and participation of local people. I am particularly pleased that the designs by young people from schools and community groups have been incorporated into the work to create a really exciting symbol of the National Forest.”

Funding for the Grange Road project was in the region of £18,000 and was provided by the Sence Valley Environmental Improvement Forum, the National Forest Company, Mantle Arts and Leicestershire County Council.
