Historic environment record for Leicestershire and Rutland now online

If you'd like to find out about the old houses in your village, Victorian factories in your town, or an archaeological dig that took place on a new housing development a couple of years ago, the 'Heritage Gateway' is the place to look.

This information comes from the Leicestershire & Rutland Historic Environment Record, which is now available online through English Heritage's 'Heritage Gateway' website. It can be accessed by visiting www.leics.gov.uk/heritage_gateway

The Historic Environment Record is the most complete database of historic buildings, archaeological finds and features within the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland.

The database, which is maintained by Leicestershire County Council, contains more than 15,000 records including historic buildings, sites and places where archaeological finds have been found - from prehistoric times to the present day.

Approximately 5,500 of these records have been made available online via English Heritage's 'Heritage Gateway' website.

Further records are being added on a regular basis. The published data includes a selection of photographs from the council’s archives.
