Children's centre celebrates birthday
Posted on 30/01/2010
A children's centre in Oadby and Wigston is celebrating its first birthday this week.
Over 35 parents and their children will be marking the Wigston Magna facility's achievements which include:
•A variety of groups for parents and carers with their children being offered including a Dads' group, baby massage and sing a song a story.
•Successful partnerships with Connexions and their Optymum group for young parents
•Oadby and Wigston voluntary organisation and their toy library with a stay and play session
•10 parent volunteers being trained to be La Leche Breastfeeding peer counsellors offering support and information to other mothers wishing to breastfeed their babies.
The centre - a partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Oadby and Wigston Borough Council - has also held events to promote national awareness topics.
The celebrations will involve a children's entertainer, face painter and lots of other activities for the children to take a part in. Parents will be joined at the centre by staff from the support organisations which they have used such as family support workers, Homestart, NHS and the library service.
Ivan Ould, County Council Cabinet Member for the Children and Young People's Service, said: “It's great to see the children's centre flourishing. A lot of hard work has gone into setting up the services, not only in the centre but also in and around the local community, to support families with young children and helping those children to achieve their full potential.”
Children’s centres work to bring services such as health visitor clinics, play and learn sessions and parenting support out into the community, where they are easily accessible to parents.
By September 2010 there will be 42 children’s centres across Leicestershire as part of a £16million county-wide programme.
