Cabinet considers future of Holmfield school
Posted on 05/02/10
Cabinet Office
A decision on whether to propose the closure of Holmfield Primary School will be taken by the County Council’s Cabinet on February 9th.
Cabinet members will decide whether to publish a statutory notice, proposing the closure of Holmfield Primary School, Leicester Forest East, after education inspectors OFSTED raised concerns.
Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: “OFSTED has serious, ongoing concerns about Holmfield. It placed the school into special measures last June and, by December, judged it was making inadequate progress.
"I met parents and told them that the return visit of OFSTED was a critically important factor in determining the outcome for the school. It was very disappointing that the judgement was inadequate, particularly since we have maintained our support for the school.
“I appreciate the majority of people who responded want to keep the school open – but OFSTED’s concerns mean we have a legal duty to consider closing Holmfield and giving its pupils a better education at other schools nearby.”
Under the Education Act 2005, the Council had a statutory duty to consider Holmfield’s future. Last October, the Council launched consultation on five options:
1) Keeping Holmfield open
2) Closure
3) Amalgamating it with another school
4) Federating it with another school
5) Closing and then restarting the school
Almost 80 per cent of consultation responses, most of which came from Holmfield pupils and parents, called for the school to remain open. A total of 232 responses were received from Holmfield and four neighbouring schools, with 184 supporting option one, 12 for option two, zero for option three, two for option four, 17 for option five and 17 for none of these options.
Holmfield currently has 111 pupils, with 172 surplus places. Around 40 of its pupils come from Leicester. If closure is approved, the existing pupils could be accommodated within nearby schools, which are all performing better than Holmfield.
If the Cabinet agrees to publish a statutory notice, there will be six weeks’ consultation before the Cabinet takes a final decision in April.
